Appendicitis – Diagnosis

Transcript

More often than not a healthcare professional will diagnose suspicion of appendicitis based on your medical history and a physical exam. The doctor will then need to rule out other health problems such as a urinary tract infection or a kidney stone, or it could even be something called an ectopic pregnancy and women before proceeding with the treatment for appendicitis. These should all be ruled out. This can be confirmed by lab tests, such as urine and blood testing, and even the use of visual imagery. Usually being CT scans, CT scan with contrast is the preferred testing modality. But if for some reason you were unable to have a CT scan such as when you were pregnant, an ultrasound or MRI can be used instead. X-ray is not used due to its inability to detect the signs of appendicitis accurately.
