Transcript

Degenerative disc disease is a catch all phrase for the degeneration of the spine. This can involve the neck also known as cervical, the mid spine, other known as thoracic, and the lower spine, also known as the lumbosacral. Degenerative disc disease involves diseases of the disc itself, the joints, the back also known as Fossettes and can involve the formation of cysts or even inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. It is very common. It is estimated at 50% of people between the ages of 50 and 70 have degenerative disc disease. And more than 90% of people over the age of 70, have degenerative disc disease that is equal between sexes and the major risk factor seems to be wear and tear, meaning gaining weight, having heavy work, heavy exercise and smoking tend to increase your chances of getting degenerative disc disease. Obviously, as we all age, we put more mileage in our bodies and as a result, degenerative disc disease increases with age as well.
