Priapism requires urgent medical attention depends on the type of priapism. The most common type is schemic or low flow priapism, which is the type where the erection is painful. This type does require urgent treatment and is considered a medical emergency. The sooner this condition is brought to the attention of a doctor, typically a urologist, the sooner the condition can be reversed so that healthy well oxygenated blood can get back into the penis, avoiding permanent tissue damage.
