Cancer is very common. Just in the year 2019, there were 1.7 million cases of cancer diagnosed just in the United States and about 600,000 deaths. The lifetime risk of developing cancer is around 40%. The death rate is around 20%. Why is that? That’s because not all cancers that form cause death. Now, how does cancer rank in terms of the top causes of death? If you think about the top five causes of death, we have heart attack, stroke, pneumonia, COPD and lung cancer. So the first cancer is in the number five position. The top four cancers are lung cancer, colon cancer, breast cancer, and prostate cancer. If you look at the overall levels of cancer in women compared to men, it goes without saying that there are some cancers that can only occur in women in female-only body parts, for example, uterus, ovaries, but for body parts that are shared between men and women, overall women have a slightly lower rate of cancer development than men.
