The common conditions that endoscopic spine surgery can treat, disc herniations and spinal stenosis, can also be treated successfully with more traditional approaches. However, we have situations where we may have a competitive athlete, a weightlifter, and they’re eager to get back to sports as quickly as possible. A faster return to work or to sports is possible with endoscopics. Furthermore, for many patients, if the same procedure, a discectomy or a laminotomy, can be successfully treated through a less invasive approach, and the recovery is faster, there’s a natural desire to seek such options. The key is that the endoscopic approach needs to be equivalent in achieving goals as a traditional approach. It is not just the size of the incision that matters. The ultimate goal is that the surgery solve the problem, which in this case is typically from a pinched nerve.
