Most people are familiar with the acronym RICE, R I C E. And for good reason. This is the main form of sprained ankle treatment. Rest helps with muscle recovery and is a key component to healing. Ice can limit swelling and pain that may be experienced. Compression dressings, bandages, or ACE wraps will help immobilize and support the injured ankle. Elevation may help prevent inflammation, which can also be called swelling in the ankle. The various components that make up the RICE method can be done by the patient at home.
