Infant Reflux – Diagnosis

As reflux is a normal part of being a baby, although some lucky duck parents don’t have to deal with it. No diagnostic testing is required. The only reason we would do diagnostic testing is if you’re having some of the issues we talked about, and so projectile vomiting or not gaining weight or noticing other concerning aspects about this. If you do notice any of these symptoms, your doctor might consider tests looking at swallowing, blood tests, stool tests, or even in rare cases, an esophagogastroduodenoscopy or endoscopy to look and get small biopsies to find out what’s going on. In some cases, reflux can be made substantially worse by a thing called milk proteins. So these are proteins that we find in milk that can get into breast milk or into formula, and they’re typically from cow’s milk, but can be from a variety of different types of proteins. This is a somewhat common issue in babies, and it can cause issues like reflux. But again, we only really worry about it if it’s causing severe discomfort or issues with growth failure. If you are seeing that, your pediatrician might recommend a switch to a different type of formula. And what we would recommend at that point would be one of the hypoallergenic formulas. We would not typically recommend using a soy formula.
