The primary problem in vasculitis is inflammation and damage to a blood vessel. Such damage leads to decreased blood flow to that organ, affecting its function. Since any organ could be involved, vasculitis affects multiple organs in our body. In case of primary vasculitis, the cause on why the immune system attack a blood vessels is unclear. In cases of secondary vasculitis, the cause could include an underlying medical condition or autoimmune disease such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, sarcoid, and sjogren’s syndrome. There are different type of infections that are also known to cause secondary form of vasculitis. Some of the common infection include hepatitis C, hepatitis B, syphilis, and viral infections. Medications are also known to cause secondary form of vasculitis. Some of the common medication includes antibiotics like penicillin, hydralazine, and many other medications.
