The way we treat male infertility is by diagnosing you properly. So once we get the diagnosis, we’re able to figure out which way to go in terms of treatment. For example, let’s say it is a hormone issue. You have low testosterone levels. There are ways in which we can actually increase your testosterone levels and in doing so, improve sperm health. Let’s say you have a varicocele, which is dilation of the blood vessels around the testicle. That can decrease sperm counts. There’s a procedure that we can do under a microscope where we’re able to address those enlarged veins and in doing so, improve sperm counts. Let’s say it’s a lifestyle issue, where you’re making poor lifestyle choices. Decreasing alcohol intake, decreasing smoking, decreasing marijuana usage, all of these can lead to improved sperm counts. Finally, if these techniques don’t work, couples may resort to assisted reproductive techniques, including IVF and ICSI, where the sperm is directly implanted into the egg, leading to fertilization.
