Incontinence – Alternative Treatments

Your doctor may recommend pelvic floor muscle exercises, also known as Kegel exercises, to help strengthen your pelvic floor. This may improve muscle strength control by tightening and relaxing the muscles that control the passage of urine. You can do this on your own, or some people get the help of a pelvic floor physical therapist. Training yourself to empty your bladder at timed intervals can help avoid incontinence, simply because your bladder will be more empty. Bladder training is gradually increasing the time interval between urination. For example, if someone urinates every hour, for one week, they should postpone urination for just five minutes every time they need to urinate. In six weeks, they should be able to postpone urination an additional 30 minutes. This concept is gradually increasing the functional capacity of the bladder. Think about it like yoga stretching for the bladder.
