Acne is what happens when hair follicles in the skin become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. Acne’s an incredibly common condition. Over 80% of the population suffer from it at one point or another. There are three different forms of acne: Comedonal, inflammatory, and nodulocystic. Comedonal acne consists of blackheads and whiteheads. The medical term for a whitehead is a closed comedone, while the medical term for open comedone is what doctors call a blackhead. Inflammatory acne leaves your skin red and bumpy, while nodulocystic acne or cystic acne is very tender, inflamed acne beneath the skin that can result in scarring. Patients can have one, two, or all these forms at a given time.
