Most commonly, we inject local anesthetics, such as Bupivacaine, also known as Marcaine, Lidocaine, also known as Novocaine, and other medications such as Ropivacaine and chloroprocaine, very technical words that your anesthesiologist knows. On occasions, opioids are added to improve the block and provide postoperative pain relief, and examples include morphine and fentanyl. Other medications such as Clonidine and epinephrine may be added to prolong the duration of analgesia.
