Founding Medical Partner: Dr. Jacqueline Eubany

INTERVIEW WITH DR. JACQUELINE EUBANY

What guided your decision to go into medicine and specifically, your chosen field?

I picked this field initially because I was always fascinated by the science and biology of the human being. As I progressed in the field, I realized that it was a much bigger calling than that. It presented an opportunity to help humankind by treating/curing illnesses and giving people a second chance in life.

“As a physician, I strive to be a good listener to make sure I address all patients concern and allow them as much autonomy as is possible when coming up with a comprehensive treatment plan.

Have you ever been a patient, and if so, what did it teach you?

I have been a patient and what it taught me is how vulnerable and helpless a patient feels, especially when given an unwanted diagnosis. As a result, as a physician, I strive to be a good listener to make sure I address all patients concern and allow them as much autonomy as is possible when coming up with a comprehensive treatment plan.

What are the most important qualities for a doctor to have?

Some of the important qualities that I think a doctor should possess include patience, compassion, perseverance, and courage. These qualities are not only important for excellent patient care, but are also important in dealing with nonclinical issues facing many physicians.

What about Doctorpedia resonates with your personal and professional mission?

My mission is to educate people about heart disease. Heart disease is a devastating, yet preventable disorder. There is so much incorrect and confusing information out there. The idea of having a website where you have trusted physicians in different specialties disseminating information about the disorders in their specialty is a great idea, and that’s how it should be. One should be selective about whom they are obtaining medical information from as this can be a life or death situation.

What problem do physicians face that Doctorpedia can help solve?

Because of the constraints of medical practice, appointment times are limited. The short amount of time per doctor visit may not be enough for the patient to fully comprehend the information being conveyed to them. With the Doctorpedia website, patients have an opportunity to watch videos explaining the medical condition as many times as they need to understand the material. This will also facilitate follow up visits, as patients, now armed with more knowledge about their health condition, can have a more informed discussion with the physician.

What do you like best about Doctorpedia?

I like that the site because it is easy to navigate and to get the information you need. It is very well organized and user friendly. The videos are just long enough to convey the information needed in verbiage understandable by many, without the requirement for any knowledge in medicine. The videos are short enough to keep one’s attention.

In your book Women and Heart Disease: The Real Story, you explain that heart disease is the number one cause of death for women in the United States today. It kills one in three women and kills more women than breast and lung cancer combined. That is staggering! Why is that?

I think a lot of it has to do with being unaware of the fact that heart disease is the number 1 killer of women in the US. That also goes along with not knowing your risk factors for heart disease. If you are not aware of your risk for heart disease, you are less likely to seek medical attention and are therefore more likely to have poorer outcomes when you do get sick.

Stress and the crazy pace of life has become the norm in today’s society and women are famous for their multitasking abilities. Is It really killing them?

Multitasking can potentially be harmful especially if you are not taking the time out to take care of yourself. Women tend to be the primary caregivers for their families and they spend most of their time catering to their family’s needs and neglecting their own health. I always explain to my female patients that they cannot be an effective caregiver if they are not themselves healthy. If you get sick, there will be no one taking care of your loved ones. So, it is in your best interest to stay healthy.

In your book, you say that an incredible 80% of heart disease and stroke can be prevented by simple lifestyle changes. What are the top tips you have?

80% of heart disease can be prevented by some simple lifestyle changes. Examples of which include eating a heart healthy diet, exercising, maintaining a healthy weight, quitting smoking, moderate alcohol consumption. A strong family history of heart disease is not a death sentence. You can work hard to decrease your risk of disease.
