As a graduate student at MIT Dr. Grant obtained his Ph.D. with the legendary neurophysiologist Dr. Jerry Lettvin, who sparked his interest in brain function and clinical neurology. He attended medical school at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH, and completed residency in Neurology and fellowship in EEG and Clinical Neurophysiology at Emory University in Atlanta, GA. After holding faculty positions at the University of California Irvine and New York University, in 2008 he joined the Department of Neurology at SUNY Downstate Medical Center as Director of the Epilepsy Program.

Dr. Grant’s research interests include the effect of epilepsy on perception, improving accuracy of EEG interpretation, culturally-based beliefs about epilepsy, and improving medication adherence. Other interests include medical history and medical ethics. He has published over 40 articles in peer-reviewed journals and is an active member of several professional organizations including the American Academy of Neurology, the American Epilepsy Society, Physicians for Human Rights, and the Royal Society of Medicine.
