Some people confuse anal cancer and rectal cancer. These are actually two different forms of cancer. One is an adenocarcinoma and one is a squamous cell carcinoma. The anal cancer being the squamous cell carcinoma.

 

We actually treat anal cancer differently than rectal cancer. Anal cancer is treated with what we call nigro protocol, and this is chemotherapy and radiation for full treatment. And then we’ll follow afterwards to ensure that you have a complete response, but the majority of patients do have a complete response and do not require any sort of surgical resection with regards to anal cancer.
