Dr. James Farrelly was born in New York, NY as the second son of immigrant parents with no physicians in his immediate family. He went to Regis High School in NYC like Dr. Anthony Fauci, and during that time, he played drums in a band called “Mackin Pulsifer” with a girl who would go on to become mildly more famous several years later under the name “Lady Gaga.”

Though he studied music as a major in college, he had always maintained a passion for scientific inquiry, medicine, and knowledge about the human body. Before starting medical school, James took his first job in biomedical research coordinating prostate cancer clinical trials. He went on to excel in medical school and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He lived out a dream when he completed a surgical residency and surgical critical care fellowship at an ivy league program in New Haven, CT. He obtained a Master of Health Science (MHS) degree and completed a pediatric surgery research fellowship along the way. His various research interests have ranged from perioperative system optimization to basic science investigations into minimally invasive intra-amniotic DNA-editing therapies for single-gene diseases and bioengineered nano- and microparticle therapies for spina bifida (a devastating congenital spinal deformity).

He practices now as a Trauma and Acute Care general surgeon at a busy inner-city hospital in New England and holds an appointment as Assistant Professor of Surgery at a well-known New England medical school. In his current role, he takes care of a wide range of surgical diseases including anything from life-threatening diagnoses like gunshot wounds and catastrophic abdominal sepsis to more common diagnoses like appendicitis, hernias, and gallbladder disease.

Dr. Farrelly’s areas of interest within Trauma and Acute Care (General) Surgery are many but include topics such as hospital system efficiency, perioperative system optimization and lean instrument/inventory management, venous thromboembolism prophylaxis, minimally invasive emergency general surgery, and surgical care of critically injured and/or critically ill patients.

His interests outside the hospital include spending time with his beautiful family–wife and daughters–, music (particularly the drums), outdoor running, raising koi, occasionally getting lost in the wilderness without cellphones, and last but certainly not least: golf.
