Overall Comment
The Noom app is designed to help with weight loss, but turn away from traditional dieting. As we know at present, traditional dieting can help with weight loss, but it lowers the overall metabolic weight, and therefore is a set-up for weight cycling. This plan is based on the psychological contributions to weight. It is more of a dietary adjustment rather than a calorie counting weight loss plan. In this way, sustainability is stronger and risk for development of disordered eating is lower.
Pros
The app is user friendly. it has a very nice weight graph. It offers encouragement even when weight is sustained or gained - and it encourages realistic understanding of weight - even if the weight goes up (and down), it’s because our weight fluctuates on a day to day basis. It’s the monthly curve that is more clear. The educational modules are helpful. It also encourages a slow increase from sedentary to active lifestyle.
Cons
There is a cost to the plan - the most economical option is still $199 per year. They point out that this is the same or less than gym memberships. The diet is based on high and low caloric density foods. Nothing is off limits, just that the more dense foods are discouraged. The downside is that if a participant were to be very rigid about their approach, they could develop a more extreme approach. However, the educational modules are clear that a broad diet is better and perfection is not the goal.
