Birthmarks can be treated in a variety of ways. Non-medication treatments such as the use of pulsed laser that can remove hemangiomas or port wine stains, particularly when they are found on the face and neck, can be used. Hemangiomas can also be treated with a medication called propranolol, which is a type of beta blocker medication. Essentially the medication shrinks the size of the blood vessels that already created the hemangioma. And most importantly, it stops new blood vessels from forming.
