A huge component of palliative care is palliating the pain that may be experienced with cancer. This is common with bone metastases, or when lesions are in bones. And there’s a lot of modalities we can use to hopefully help the pain that’s caused by that cancer lesion. One of those examples is what we call stereotactic radiation, where over a couple of days, or even just a couple of doses, deliver radiation to that lesion that causes the most pain, and more often than not patients get relief after weeks from treating that lesion focally. Also, there’s all kinds of analgesics or pain control medications we can use. Opiates are some, but there’s also other medications that have been shown to help that day-to-day pain. Things are being studied like THC and tinctures, which can help with generalized pain control as well as increase your appetite.
