HPV vaccine protects against the types of HPV that most often cause cervical, vaginal, or vulvar cancers. It can also help prevent other types of cancers, including anal cancers and oral or throat cancers that can at times be due to HPV as well. The HPV vaccine, Gardasil, is recommended for both males and females between age of 9 through 26. It has most recently been approved until age 45. It has been recommended to be given in two shots for those who are younger than 15, but consists of three shot series for those who are older. The vaccine also protects against genital warts that are caused by what’s called no-risk HPV types. The HPV vaccination prevents new HPV infections, but does not treat existing HPV infections or diseases. This is why it is so important to give this vaccine before exposure, which is usually at a younger age.
