Gallstones are a widespread condition. Each year, nearly 1 million people in the United States are diagnosed with gallstones. About a quarter of those will need treatment, usually in the form of surgery. In addition, the total number of people in the United States currently affected by gallstones is between 10 to 15% of the population.
