I get asked often, “what is PCOS and how can intermittent fasting affect PCOS?” PCOS or Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is the most common endocrine disorder in women. The clinical manifestations can vary from menstrual disorder to severe disturbance of reproductive and metabolic functions. What does research show? Recent research has shown that women with PCOS who engage in fasting techniques saw a reduction in chronic sympathetic overactivity, which is usually seen in PCOS. This in turn reduces the stress on your hormone levels and ensures physical and mental health. Short term calorie restriction often seen in intermittent fasting has been shown to increase the hormone called luteinizing hormone in women who have PCOS. Therefore it has been shown to have the effect of fasting in correcting ovulatory consequences in women and enhancing reproductive health overall. It’s definitely something that should be done under physician supervision.
