Jellyfish Stings – Overview

Transcript

Jellyfish stings are commonly observed while swimming or diving in sea waters. Jellyfish are more prevalent during the months of May through September when jellyfish bloom, but may occur all year round. Be aware you could still get stung by a jellyfish, even if it’s dead. A jellyfish sting is caused by microscopic barbed stingers that are contained in their tentacles. In turn, every single stinger has a special part that contains the venom alongside a coiled tube. It is this tube that penetrates the victim and releases the venom, which then affects both the immediate sting site and potentially the bloodstream.
