Living Donor Nephrectomy – Donation Requirements

share

Transcript

The testing to get accepted as a living donor is very extensive. Kidney donation is a major surgical procedure. We’re removing an essential organ, and for your body, it’s like the Olympics. And so we need to go into it prepared and make sure that you have enough reserves to be healthy in the long run after donating, to make sure that all of the health maintenance testing is up to date. The testing that will be done we will determine your suitability as a donor. Your overall health, and your kidney health and anatomy will be assessed. So not everybody was born to be a donor and sometimes some people will pass all of the medical tests, but once we do the scan, there’ll be either too many arteries or discrepancy in the kidney sizes that make it that we’re not able to select you as a donor. And that is usually no fault of your own, of course. And people can be quite disappointed when they’ve been through all this testing. But we’re very thankful for everybody who steps up to do something. So amazing and selfless.
