The majority of lung cancers do occur in smokers. And as we know, smokers are also predisposed to having a higher incidence of COPD, emphysema, and overall poorer lung function. So in that patient population specifically, we really have to go through these tests to ensure that we’re not taking too much lung out and that we’re leaving the patient with enough lung in place to give them a good quality of life post-operatively.
