Once the lung cancer has progressed, your symptoms may be different since later lung cancer affects other parts of the body, like the bones or the brain. Symptoms that develop in late stage lung cancer could be pain or tenderness in your bones or joints, bone fractures changes in your voice, such as hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, swelling of your face or arms, fatigue, and weakness. Also, there could be new onset of seizures, and changes in alertness or mental status.
The palliative care specialists together with your oncology team will be able to find what is causing your symptom and offer recommendation for symptom management. Example, if a bone breaks where there is a tumor that makes it weak, palliative radiation therapy in addition to pain management interventions will help reduce the pain and improve your ability to function.
