While people of color get melanoma much less frequently, they are four times more likely to have advanced stages of melanoma and are 1.5 times more likely to die of it. There are likely healthcare disparities that factor into the late detection and higher fatality rate. The other reason is that people of color often tend to get melanomas in areas that are less noticeable than areas where white people get it. Those areas can include non sun exposed areas, such as the mouth, the fingers, the soles of the feet and around the rectum or under the fingernails.
