In the spinal canal, which is the tunnel through which nerves pass through in the spine, a wide variety of conditions can occur that could be treated with spinal nerve decompression. Two of the most common conditions involve disc herniations and spinal stenosis. These conditions place extra pressure on a nerve in the spinal canal. They can be treated either with a discectomy in the case of a disc herniation or a laminotomy if the spinal stenosis is due to a bony fragment that might be pressing on the nerve. Spinal conditions are exacerbated by a variety of conditions. Obesity can affect the spinal discs and the facet joints. Diabetes can affect nerves. A smoking history can affect discs. Poor ergonomics at work can affect spinal alignment. Increasing stresses, occupational hazards at work involving heavy lifting can also affect these conditions.
