Spinal nerve decompression surgeries, whether a discectomy or a foraminotomy or a laminotomy, are the most common spinal procedures performed today. These general procedures accomplish the same goal. These surgeries are very precise and are focused usually on a single nerve. They are the treatment of choice by spine surgeons in the treatment of a wide variety of spinal conditions. These procedures can be performed in the neck, which we call the cervical spine, the upper back, called the thoracic spine, or the lower back, called the lumbar spine.
